The workers, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees(CUPE), attempted to display protest signs during council's public question period. But when they began unwrapping the banners, Mayor Jack Loucks told them to remove the signs. “We will not procede until you take those out of this meeting,” he shouted above the noise of rustling paper. “They will not be left in the council chambers,” he added angrily. After a few minutes of hesitation a few of the demonstrators removed the signs, which read “Man Size Wages for Women!”, “Keep Our Benefits”, and similar slogans. Seabus picketing declared illegal Members of the Greater Vancouver Regional District Employees’ Union (GVR- DEU) who jammed up the bus loop at North Van- couver's SeaBus_ terminal twice on Wednesday last week in support of their strike have been told such action is illegal. The picketing occurred the day after the ~union bogan its strike to back the same demands as_ their CUPE counterparts. Bus drivers refused to pass the picket line, with the result that buses piled up outside the SeaBus loop and passengers arriving from Vancouver found them- selves stranded at the ter- minal. The matter was taken to the Labor Relations Board to determine whether such action was legal, with the union agreeing to suspend similar picketing until a verdict was reached, which eventually came Saturday. Whereas the union pointed out that the GVRD receives the takings from bus fare boxes, plans new routes, controls the number of buses in service and even the amount of transit man- power, the LRB declared transit to be separate from the GVRD.
