OTTAWA (UPC) - Sales
of new motor vehicles rose
slightly in January when
buyers turned strongly from
North American production
to imported models,
Statistics Canada reported
Thursday.

Total sales of 88,737 units
were up 0.3 percent from the
1979 figure but sales of
North American passenger
cars were off 6.9 percent to
50,929. Sales of commercial
vehicles were off 5.3 percent
to 24,080.

However, sales of
passenger cars manufac-
tured overseas rose 61

percent from a year earlier
and sales of foreign com-
mercial vehicles was up 108
percent to 1,404.

The total sales value of
$768.4 million was up 13.8
percent over January 1979.

Windsor, Ont., riding where
a Chrysler Canada engine
plant is located, has been
holding talks with the
financially troubled com-
pany to arrange up to $300
million in government
backed loans.

Chrysler, which recently
laid off workers in Windsor,
says it needs more than $1
bilion to overhaul the
engine plant to make fuel
efficient V6 motors and
retool its nearby truck plant
to manufacture light trucks.

Gray said Chrysler is
Canada's eighth largest
industrial corporation, and
its bankruptcy would deal a
serious blow to Canadian
workers.

“It’s a question of the
impact on the economy as a
whole... (and) to provide
support, you have to
demonstrate that it has an
impact and effect on the
economy,” he said.

“Like it or not, that’s the
case when it comes to
Chrysler Corporation. So, its
well-being is relevant to the
well-being of the Canadian
economy.”

Earlier in the week, Gray
said the Liberal government
may take part ownership in

Chrysler in return’ for
guaranteed loans to the
company.
