I. never fully understood’ her reasoning but perhaps it is the same desire which makes. many of us read. horoscopes or try to learn about the future re it s Ive never bothered to have my future ‘read’ as I find the . unknown events. of tomorrow or next week more exciting by’ having © them ‘Pop. up’ without warning. I do however believe that one can influence the future by the power of positive - thinking — if a person desires something .strongly enough (with all his being, as they say) there is a very good chance that the desire will be . satisfied. The number of methods that man has devised to ’ predict the future is quite astonishing but even more astonishing are some of the materials used in making predictions. There are the ‘regular’ methods, of course, which rely on cards, stars and hand impressions — but did you ever hear of Tiromancy? That is an odd form of divination utilizing cheese! Or how about Sycomancy? This can be done in two Ways — first by writing messages on tree leaves; the slower they dry, the better. the omen. A more modern way is to write questions on slips of paper, roll them: up and hold them in a strainer above a steaming pot. Whichever paper unfolds first will be the Look into the futur re | one answered. But you must incl ude a blank slip with the collection. And next time .you eat Chinese: food and get .your fortune cookies, think about A strange method that really intrigues me has the improbable name _ of Phyllorhodomancy. — This divination method dates from: ‘ancient Greece and” -consists. Of slapping rose petals against the hand — one. judges the future suc-. cess of a venture according . to the loudness of the soufid produced. A rose is a rose is a slap. And here’ 's-one that could clear the backlog of court . . cases in no time at all. Called Margaritomancy, it is a procedure _Uutilizing “pearls — our mysterious world Aleuroman y — if you can. In this cient - method, | answers to. questions. were written on paper slips, rolled in balls of dough and then baked. The dough balls-were - ‘mixed up and one pickéd out at random. The. beauty: of this system is that even if one is dissatisfied with the an- . swer, you can always eat. | You'll be pleased to hear that Anthropomancy has been outlawed. I don’t know quite what the method was but it involved human sacrifice. Perhaps this was the favorite of the Aztec priests who used to do- 2 et SPOS OSESSESEHHOOSHOS by George Cunningham-Tee which were supposed to bounce upward beneath an ‘inverted pot if a guilty person approached. Although not strictly a means of predicting the future it nevertheless could have a definite influence on the future of those ‘sen- tenced’ by the jumping - pearls. -- The ingenuity of the | ancients knew no bounds in looking for omens. or divinatory materials. They | could even find significance in onion sprouts. (Crom- niomancy) or unmelted wax poured into cold water (Ceroscopy) where in- terpretations were made from the forming bubbles. Quite a number of omen- methods: are still with us although you would never recognize them by their Sunday names. Next time you react when a black cat crosses your path you will be practising Apantomancy. This is a method which forecasts from chance meetings with animals, birds and other creatures. —of particular predictions stems from a= general principle. There is more to the art of making predictions than first - meets the eye and much of” the methodology. is scien- tifically based and classified. Different classifications have different applications: for éxample the deductive classification has its basis in verifiable laws and is ap- plicable in science and sociology where deduction stem from the unconscious through visions'‘or dreams. There are dozens of strange methods that we can’t even touch upon but perhaps the one that ‘tickles my fancy’ the most is called Geloscopy — this was the art of divination from the tone of someone's laughter.
