A lot of the animals that we are slaughtering are endangered - that is, they are vanishing from this country and the earth. We slaughter them for their flesh and furs and feathers, for their land (as evidenced by wolf Poisonings), and for ‘sport.’ Our political system is much more responsive to those who would continue this slaughter than it is to those who oppose it, as the slaughterers are in the main commercial interests of one kind or the other. . An example of the ef- fectiveness of commercial lobbying can be seen in the success of the Norwegian sealing interests at having . the much-publicized harp seal slaughter continued ’ year after year, in the face of declining herd sizes and international bad publicity. - Contrary to the hype spread about by the Canadian government, at taxpayer's expense (a booklet defending the slaughter, produced by an advertising agency employed by the government, .was reputed to have cost over thirty thousand dollars), the slaughter is indefensible on any grounds. The animals are not used for food but are simply clubbed to’ death (if lucky), skinned, and left on the ice, and the Canadian economy benefits by the magnificent sum of one dollar per pelt which is paid to the slaughterers' by the Nor- wegians, who then sell the ~. furs in the main to Japanese women. The size of the seal herds is declining, and there is much controversy about the ‘facts’. The government has helicopters, mounted policemen, ‘lawyers, judges, jails, icebreakers, fisheries ‘officers’, and hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend on the slaughter. Green- peace’s entire budget for the last anti-seal campaign was less than what the govern- ment spent on the brochure. Greenpeace’s money made up of private donations from individuals. The average donation to Greenpeace is cight dollars. This may give you an idea of . the relative size of the forces in this struggle.
