Rutledge 2nd at Long Beach

DAVID Rutledge of
West Vancouver almost
won the Toyota Grand
Prix of Long Beach
April 15.

Rutledge started fourth
and finished second) in’ his

third race of the young
CARY Tovota Adiantic series.

Rutledge, who was fifth in
the opening race of the sea-
son at Homestead, Fla., sits
at fitth place in series stand-
ings.

Buddy Rice, who won at
Homestead, won the Long
Beach race and feads the
standings.

“The Lynx team gave me
a really good car for the
race,” said Rutledge. “f was

able to run a pace that kept
me in touch with the leaders
which let me take advantage
of their mechanical problems
toward the end of the race.

“There are still a few
things to work on, but I think
we'll definitely be in the hunt
at every race this season.”

Rutledge’s next race is
June 3 at the Miller Lite
225/Milwaukee Mile in
Milwaukee, Wise.

Down he went to a scrawny 160. Even worse, the happy young
man was now morose and sullen. The job he once loved he now
hated.

Accused of being a neurotic and a hypochondriac, he made a
point of insulting fans and newspapermen. He went so far as to
throw a punch at a Toronto Star reporter. He refused to sign
autographs, attend banquets or submit himself to interviews.

More than anything else, his PR shortcomings got him tad-
ed to Boston in 1956. But less than two years later, Adams
decided the Wings could no longer live without him. So, he sent
the promising rookie, Glenn Hall, to Chicago and got Sawchuk
back. He continued to play brilliantly, both in Detroit and
Toronto, but his disposition never improved. He was only 40
when he died in 1970 after a senseless backyard brawl with a for-
mer teammate.

Like Barrasso, he was an extreme case in his innate ability to
offend people. But goalies have always been known for their
eccentricities, for behaviour beyond the norm. Most of those
close to the game put it down to nerves. The strain of being the
target in a shooting gallery, or being the most visible goat when
the opposing team scores the winning goal.

Plante cased his frayed nerves by locking himself in his hotel
room and knitting his underwear. Or, setting women’s hair in a
beauty parlor he owned. Hall’s nerves were such that he regular-
ly threw up between periods. He developed an immense dislike
for his job, for the fans and for the press.

At the opposite extreme was the Leafs’ great goalie of the
1940s, Turk Broda. He was known to fall asleep between peri-
ods. He got along with everyone. Amazing, particularly because
there were no face masks during his career.

‘The best nerves story belongs to Wilf Cude, who played goal
for the Canadiens during the 1930s. While eating a pre-game
steak at home one afternoon prior to leaving for the Forum, he
took offense at some innocuous remark by his wite.

He hurled a steak up against a kitchen wall and was watching
in horror as it slid to the floor. Within a minute he phoned the
Canadiens’ front office and announced his immediate retirement.

Goalies, Barrasso included, have many valid reasons for being
different.
