Macliaster plays in town nexi week Bob Mackin News Reporter NATALIE MacMaster’s career is in her own hands. The fiddler from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia is charting her own course, dis- tinct from her flashy, outspo- ken former classmate Ashley MaclIsaac and Melanie Doane, another Nova Scotian who moved to the bright lights and big city of Toronto and is going for a top 40 audience. MacMaster just released her fifth album Ja My Hands and comes to Vancouver next Thursday to play the Vogue Theatre. The new album is her most ambitious vet, with tracks recorded in Nashville, Tenn., and Glasgow, Scotland, her ancestral home- land. “Ie’s more involved, it’s more everything,” she said last week from London, Ont. “I feel musically it’s a more mature album. I’m_ pleased with my own performance on the album, it sounds better to me, the playing is better.” Produced by fcllow Marictimer Gordie Sampson, In My Hands includes contri- butions from Nashville fiddler Mark O’Connor and Irish accordion player Sharon Shannon. MacMaster even untucked the fiddle from beneath her chin and sang the title track herself. Canadian guitarist extraordinaire Jesse Cook also joined her in studio. MacMaster’s My Roots Are Showing album won the 1999 Juno Award for best instrumental album, which led to a nomination for a Genie Award based on her performance on the music awards show with Cooke. MacMaster co-hosted the national Canada Day celebration on Parliament Hill this year, but she has gradually made her name known worldwide with appearances on the same stage as Carlos Santana and Luciano Pavarotti. Like MaclIsaac, she spent time on tour and in studio with the Chieftains, Ireland’s most durable traditional music group. “They’re just top notch, class act is what they are. I toured with them as well, they’ve just got it together. They will be together forever, they’ve been together for 35 years or some- thing crazy and I admire them all. They're great musicians and have kept doing what they've done from day one and they’re still fresh about it.” MacMaster begins a tour swing through B.C. on Wedaesday in Mission at the Clarke Foundation Theatre (604- 820-3961) and continues the tour Thursday at the Vogue, Friday at the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival, Saturday in Port Alberni, Sunday in Vicroria und Monday in Nanaimo. She's already scheduled a March 9-11, 2000 engagement with the Vancouver Symphony at the Orpheum Theatre. If you can’t wait that long, she'll be down the [-5 at the Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon, Wash. on Nov. 3 (360-336-2858). Cheek out her Web site at .
