Seals played in the water just off the beach in front of their property. The Gloags swan a lot, dug for butter clams, and fished for cod, and rock cod. Sometimes they really lucked out and caught a salmon. They would put the heads of the rock cod into a crab net, lower it inte the water for a few hours or sometimes over night, then haul it up and wow. There would be two or three big crabs in the net, which made a fresh and delicious meal. With the children grown, Sadie and Geoff sold the waterfront property in 1975 and moved to North Vancouver. Then in i988 Geoff had a stroke that left him confined to a wheelchair. Sadic looked after him ar home tor eight years until his death in 1996. Geoff built their summer home on Osprey Lake, near Princeton, B.C. where the family continues to spend a lot of time during the sum- mer season relaxing and Sunday, September 19, 1999 — North Shore News - 23 enjoying, nature. Sadie moved back to Deep Cove in 1997 — te the area ofthe North Shore that she calls home. She has been active in volunteer work for 30 vears, at St. Simon’s Church, North Arm Community Centre, Brownies and Girl Guides, North Shore Winter Club, and the PTA. She received a lifetime membership with the PTA. Sadie does exquisite crafts such as throws, quilts and hooked rugs. She has just recently completed on paper, along with a cousin, the Purves’ family tree dating back to 1840. These days Sadie keeps busy visiting with family, chatting with friends on the phone, walking and reading a lot and baking for her family. Each year it is a family cus- tom for her to make 25 Christmas cookies for her grandchildren. Just the type of Granny ail of us would love to have. Sept. 23 she will be 86 years young — Sadie, from all of us, continued good health and happiness.
