often handed the staff $25 or so at
the beginning of the crossing with
the femark, ‘‘Take good care of us
and there'll be more where that
came froim.’’

Today, you'd be the laughing

stock of the entire ship’s company
if you tried that stunt.

And now, just to show you how
optional tipping isn't, a story:

I've only once had really poor
service on a ship. On a crossing
between Buenos Aires and Genoa
we had a cabin steward that was
awful. He snooped in our cabins
when we were out — rooting
through dresser drawers and such.
He entered cabins unannounced,

especially if he had reason to
believe you’d just stepped out of
the shower,

He had beady little eyes and
groping little hands. It got so bad
that I spoke to the purser about
him.

All the passengers in our section
decided that we'd teach him a
good lesson so when the last day
arrived we just ignored him — he
didn't get a penny.
