The North Van-raised vio- linist takes leave as concert master of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra to per- form Thursday with the VSO at the Orpheum. Only those most familiar with her playing will notice a subde difference in sound when Hoebig rises to perform the violin solo from Vivaidi’s Four Seasons, The change arises from the purchase of a new instrument in June. It’s a Landolphi, craft- ed in Milan between 1770 and 1775, and it’s a beauty. The violin replaces Hoebig’s instrument of 16 years, a contemporary model purchased new in the carly °80s. On the phone from home in Winnipeg’ Friday, the 38- year-old violinist discussed tier reasons for change. “It’s almost like looking for a new house,” she said, “you want something better.” Hoebig was in Halifax at a music festival last summer when she. received the phone call from a Montreal dealer that the Landolphi was on the _ Henry Birks & Sons is pleased to announce the Grand Opening of their new location at Park Royal.
