Setting them
up for failure

in defence of all things green

BUILDERS, planners
and even individuals
are all guilty. Their sin
is starting out a life on
the wrong foot with
nay a spark of a chance
of a bright future.

In fact. if the victims buck
the trend and actually start to
show an untikely perseverance
ands stretch” their sinewy
beings, they face the unpalat-
able prospect of be
lessly chopped down io size.
The perpetrators of this sce-
nario, and the ones that land-
ed them there, are very often
the same beings.

The lives these people are
sentencing tO an existence
centred around a looming
doom are not those of other
individuals or even animals.
Their victims are even more
defenceless and often over-
looked when it comes to the
efforts of preservationists.

Not the ones that pre-

date development in many of

our greenbelt, but those placed
in all sorts of strange places to
better the appearance ofa devel-
opment or a street corner.

While the preservation of
existing trees acrass the North
Shore often appears to add to
the virtue of many a_politi-
cian, their attitude undergoes
a change and becomes quite
cavalier whea planning for the
future. Develop know
development plans calling for
abundant shrubbery and trees
scattered across a propored
property have a much Detter
chance of being accepted by
politicians searching for some-
thing to praise.

The same goes for side-
walks and other walkways
where trees have been planted
by municipality staffs like
theyre going out of sie. The
future of these burgeoning
oxygen providers? It’s bleak

the best-case scenarios.

Their roots are expected to
suck moisture from the earth
beneath the concrete jungle
surrounding them. Not an
easy task, but somehow a few
manage it. Those that succeed
make do with limited water
supplies that have flowed along
the concrete before locating a
crack to seep into the earth
below. En roure it has picked

up the gnime and siudga: left
behind by hustling traffic.
