The media pack was now
assembled, hiding in a little hospi-
tal waiting room.

I made another call to CITY-
TV in Toronto, where the entire
newsroom had leapt into action,
phoning in every direction to get
reinforcements of Mounties or
somebody to the island.

Finally one of my producers
made a connection with police in
Moncton, New Brunswick, who
dispatched a plane with a contin-
gent of 12 officers to the airport
where Watson, battered, cut and
suffering from bruised kidneys,
was being held, guarded by only
two island cops, while the mob
roared and jeered, taking over the
entire waiting area.

By now I'd been on the phone
to the police chief in town, aad he
assured me Paul was all right. _

In the meantime, what I didn’t
know was that he was busy telling
the reporters who were starting to
call in from all over the place, that

All the cop who'd finally
showed up had (oid us was that it
was safe to go back to the hotel.

. Nothing to worry about. No, they

would not take us to the jail, as I
wanted.
Then a familiar face poked

escaped by jumping from the win-
dow. He had a rented car. Did any-

Off we went, immediately spot-
ting a pickup truck coming out of
the hotel parking lot on our tail.

Our German friend hung a right
at the first corner, and circled

Somewhere, we lost the pickup,

We booked a room as deep in
the bowels of the building as we
could, hustling, panting to the
room, got everything in, bolted the
door, and clamped the chain in
place.

“Damn, I want a drink,” I said.

“You're not going to the bar?”
Todd gasped incredulously.

I shook my head. Thirsty as I
was, | knew that was too crazy. All
we needed was to be spotted by
one local, and we'd be on the run
again. Then my eyes fell upon the
mini-bar in the corner. A lapsed
Catholic, } looked upward through
the ceiling into space for several
seconds, and said to Todd: “There
is a God.”
