Junior *** (Universal) Rated Mature (at Cineplex Odeon Cinemas) Arnold Schwarzenneger is proud of his soft skin. He frets about having “nothing to we-ah.” And amazingly, his stomach is bigger than his pecs. Yes, he is going to be a mommy. But does the idea of Arnold as the world’s first pregnant man carry an entire movie? After all, how long can you laugh at mucho-macho Amnie blubbering over a sentimental TV commercial or complaining of tender nippies. Well, pretty long actually. Fortunately, writers Kevin Wade and Chris Conrad don’t just rely on incongruity for laughs. They also have an easy-going but deftly con- structed script with terrific charac- ters, | Emma Thompson steals the movie as klutzy love interest, Dr. Diana Redden. Naturally; Dr. Alex Hess (Schwarzenneger) and Diana have a rocky start since she’s taking over his research lab at the behest of —_ meddlesome university bigwig Noah Baines (Frank Langella). But who needs official backing, female test subjects or FDA approval when you have a break- through fertility drug that will bene- fit millions and generate billions of bucks? Not Alex’s less-scrupulous partner, gynecologist Barry . _ Arbogast (Dainy DeVito). Use “Alex, a scientist who won’t let emo- tions thaw his frosty-eyed judgment. It’s just for the first trimester anyway, until they secure financing ‘from a major pharmaceutical com- ._, pany: But after massive female hor- “mone doses, Alexi is anything but . The ‘Terfainator, a . cRinics’ Tim Bell FILM REVIEW Thanks to a funny script, comedy maestro Ivan Reitman’s snappy direction and the energetic ensemble acting, Junior is a happy arrival. oo To celebrate today’s release of Junior, Universal pictures will pre- sent all proud parents of babies born today at Lions Gate Hospital with Welcome Junior Prize Packages. Each prize package contains a Junior chocolate candy cigar, mini-poster, balloon and a T-shirt. eo¢ Star Trek Generations *** (Paramount) Rated Mature (at the Esplanade, Capitol, Dunbar, Richmond, Station Square, Guildford, Harris Road, Eagle Ridge, Scott 72 and Willowbrook Cinemas) Star Trek VI was supposed to have put the aging original cast out to pasture, but it’s satisfying to see Kirk, Scatty and Chekhov dusted off once more, this time to christen the maiden movie voyage of the New Generation. Appropriately, the first image is a bottle of Dom Perignon, vintage 2255, tumbling through space to smash on the hull of the Enterprise. There's no rest for the weary, however, as retired Captain Kirk finds himself pressed into service as a time rift threatens his old starship. After a hectic series of crises, the two captains Kirk and Picard (William Shatner and Patrick Stewart) unite to defeat a scientist (Malcolm McDowell at his bright- eyed best) bent on getting into that time warp even if it means sacrific- ing a solar system along the way. Since both shows are in perpetual syndication, it’s assumed you're passingly familiar with everybody. Director David Carson lets noisy, impressive special effects almost dwarf the story which is transparent- ly contrived to meld the two shows. But let’s face it, for fans, it’s nice to have Kirk officially turn the chair - over to his successor. SHOWTIME HOTLINE: Famous Players ...
