Contributor <4 - THE SONG River of Dreams is only one of many songs by “Billy Joel performed last Fri- day. .evening as Vancouver greeted him with open arms and screams of excitement. “-Nancouver was the first Canadian city Joel visited on his’ River of Dreams tour, which has been on the road _for.the past three months. He “said he, loves our city and even’ partied | up here while performing in Seattle. Joel put. on a‘ compelling performance, despite. some technical difficulties... Only minutes into. the. first song: drummer Zachary Alford broke’ his bass pedal, “Dut in- Stead of stopping the show, Joel ‘just Taughed and gave it to someone in the crowd. Unfortunately the problems didnot stop there. Later, during a song called Pressure, his -keyboard want haywire. Again ‘this did not stop Joel, he just - moved . to another keyboard. _ Then his foot pedal, which ‘moved the piano in a.circle, decided to stick. So he invited the people in the high blue seats across from him (the Yukon he called it) to move (down south) to the lower red seats behind -him. What a guy! During the entire’ show.he remained calm and made jokes whenever possible, especially “when . something went wrong. He was well prepared for difficulties. The stage consisted of two baby grand pianos, one in the front and one in the back. It also had two keyboards, one on cither side and a drum- mer’s platform which rotated. . He definitely pleased the en- tire audience. .. The audience was mostly an over-30 crowd; however, I and many other yeung adults _ enjoyed. the concert even though we were just babies when Joel first started his singing career. As he pointed out, we were just sperm when the song Pressure was released. When my roommate invited me to see Billy Joel, | knew who he was (of course) but I wasn’t a big fan. However, after his outstanding perfor- rnance, Joel is now on my top 20 list. ~ ~ North Shore News BRAAAKAARAAAALL: THE ISSUE of turbans in Legion halls has peor EVI | caused quite a stir across the country. HAS become a hot topic in’ Multiculturism, which was one of the building blocks of this country, is fast becoming something that could easily tear this country apart. Canada. > ByAslamNathoo <4 ad ZAP! Contributor a People are now imposing racist ideas under the guise of true multiculturalism, and personally it makes me sick. ; For those of you who are un- aware of what Remembrance Day at a Royal Ca- nadian Legion, | will outline what apparently took place. : The Royal. Canadian Legions put out an invitation to all men and women who served in the First World War, World War, and the Korean war, inviting them to come down on Remembrance Day and honor the many men and women who died in the service of their ‘respective ‘countries during those years. Five men, now living in the Lower Mainland, who had_ becn members of the Indian Armed Forces and had served during one or more of those wars, decided to attend the ceremony. Unfortunately, the building in which the ceremony was held has a bylaw stating that all head-dress’ must be removed before entering. These five men, much to. the dismay of the security officers on happened on. the Secord , duty, were wearing turbans. Turbans are included as part of the Indian Armed Forces uniform. The officers on duty insisted that the turbans be removed, but the men explained that turbans . are religious symbols and therefore could not be taken off. To make a ftong story short, these men were denied access to the Remembrance _ Day ceremo- nies. _ This is only one example of such injustices. I am deeply troubled that something that this country values so greatly is being so badly abused. The other day I was reading a letter addressed to the -editor: in the North Shore News, where a manitalked about multiculturalism, referring to peo- ple of European descent. He went on to say that people originating outside of Europe shouldn't. be allowed in this country because that is multiracialism and is something that Canada should not allow. This type of talk disgusts me. How can anyone say or think that multiculturalism only pertains to people of European stock? Besides, what gives him the right io say that people not originating {from Europe shouldn’t be allowed to obtain Canadian citizenship? If he wants to get technical about who should and should not be allowed in this country, then he should go back to wherever his ancestors originated from because technically this country belongs to the First Nation, not European immigrants!
