FASHION Turnabout hits turning point Consignment boutique cpens new south Granville store VANCOUVER-BASED _ consign- ment clothing firm Turnabout tecently celebrated its 15th anni- versery with the opening of its new store on south Granville Street. This designer resale clothing chain, owned by Jay Lapka, is North America’s largest and most establishcd consignment firm. On Nov. 5, the store at 312i Granvitle St. had its official open- ing, with 250 guests crammed into tie boutique for the season’s first Christmas function. A fashion show featuring festive party dresses was a highlight. The audience was amazed that Heritage Is ROOTS CANADA Lid. recently launched a line of true Canadian T-shirts which depict our roots. These thick cotton Ts feature pic- tures documenting historic na- tional events. You cas show your national pride by sporting a T-shirt which recreates «explorer Jacques Car- tier’s introduction te the Stadacona Indians, whose word for village, ‘‘kanata,’’ prompted the country’s name. Or pay homage to the originator of Superman, Toronto-born Joe Shuster, by. wearing an emblazon- ed image of the comic book hero. If you’re a. sports historian, a facial image of Jacques Plante captures the first hockey mask created by the Montreal Cana- diens’ goalie in 1959. The Roots heritage T-shirts are all based on themes that have been covered on the ‘‘Heritage cs the sexy sequinned and statement-making numbers on the models were indeed second-hand. Who would give them up? Turnabout sells only fine quali- ty clothing in like-new condition, which often has an imported label which cannot even be purchased anywhere in Vancouver. Hundreds of well-known and well-to-do clients of the store regularly take shopping sprees abroad, then drop what they have worn for a season at Lapka’s store to be resold. Lapka says that she is sworn to secrecy, so can’t disclose who her clients are, but she says they in- clude royalty, politicians, well- known lawyers, doctors, musi- cians, actors and authors. She admits if she could tell customers who originally owned the mer- chandise much of it would fly our the door. The firm has steadily grown in the last few years, with three stores in the Lower Mainland, over 3,500 actively consigning clients and gross sales of over $1 million. The introduction of an upper crust second-hand ciothing store to this exclusive retail area is definitely a sign of the times. - Carol Crenna depict Canadian roots cvarnutes,"” which are the 60- second shows that have regularly been aired on Canadian television over the last two years.
