(| Mulroney’s blustering *! makes matters worse JUL BE BACK WHEN YOU SAUT HIM UP! Democracy behind closed doors Dear Editor: L have just read the Consensus Report on the Constitution, which was provided to me, not by my federal or provincia! government, but by the North Shore News; and I’m more appalled and frightened ebout it than ever. This is a basic redefinition and restructuring of our country, cob- bled together behind closed doors and without meaningful consulta- tion and input from the people, by politicians several of whom are lame ducks or new to the national scene, as is Mr. Harcourt. And the only word I’ve had from my governments is ‘‘Say yes, or else.”” The report states ‘‘Canada is a democracy ...”” In a democracy the government carries out the wishes of the peo- ple — this document is being One vote to Dear Editor: The most significant probleny is the upcoming referendum lies in the nature of the referendum itself. The Charlottetown Accord presents us with a series of com- plex and important reforms. Some of these changes are necessary and 1 support: their implementation. Yet, at the same time, I am op- posed to other items within the agenda. ot ra = eee thru presented to me in the opposite way; it tells me how I should be ruled. This is called dictatorship, and the self-serving men who con- cocted this document do not deserve our confidence or support. The last thing we need or want is more politicians, whom we pay to follow the wishes of a dic- tatorial leader, thus negating any pretension of democratic election, and then retire them with those infamous indexed pensions. The document ensures that there will be very many more of them. The original confederation document was a hurriedly contriv- ed, utterly undemocratic agree- ment to form a country out of abandoned colonies that were in imminent likelihood of being ab- sorbed into the United States. Anyone who has studied Cana- dian history knows that it was an exercise of overwhelming political opportunism and. pressure, of backroom bullying and secret negotiation. Sound familiar? tt even ended in Charlottetown, whither the Fathers of Confedera- tion were literally kidnapped, de- tained and coerced until they agreed with an egomaniacal, alco- holic politician named John A. Macdonald. Now, 125 years later, with our 20th century democratic percep- tions, needs and technology, we're still being governed by the elitist, paternalistic politics of the horse-and-buggy days. This must change before we rewrite our Constitution for the 21st century. Elisabeth Preddie . West Vancouver resolve complex issues? How can I be expected to an- swer Yes or No to the overall package when I simultaneously support and oppose individual items within the proposed accord? One cannot give a simple Yes or No to a question that involves an extensive and diverse range of issues. By voting one way or the other I will be contradicting myself, therefore how can I allow myself to vote? - | am waiting for someone to For a limited time only... ® re Dinner ga . RESERVATIONS RECOMMENDED a5 NS Dear Editor: Prime Minister Brian Mulroney should immediately stop his hysterical blustering over the con- sequences of a No vote to his proposed constitutional amend- ments. Mulroney must know that an overwhtlming majority of Cana- { dians was repelled by his charac- terization of opponents of his deal as ‘‘enemies of Canada.’’ Now, however, he is doing something much worse. By his apocalyptic language, he has helped to destabilize the Ca- nadian dollar and drive up interest rates a full 2%. How many Canadians would suffer if, as a result of his ir- responsible rhetoric, the economy were to destabilize in the wake of the likely failure of the deal? Mulroney seems to be deliber- ately putting his partisan interests ahead of Canada’s interests. He should be ashamed of trying to scare Canadians into voting for his deal blindly. We -urge your readers to read the constitutional deal, consider it on its merits,.and then vote ac- cordingly. Mulroney should trust Canadians to make the right choice. And a bad deal forever. Did you know that the Mulroney deal gives each of the provinces and the federal government a veto over future changes to the Senate, House of Commons, and Supreme Court? This will make it virtually impossible for future generations to improve or correct defects in our major federal institutions. The deal is a vote of non-confidence in the next generation of Canadians.
