As I suggested last week, many first-time gardeners cperate under the misconception that they shouldn’t even begin thinking about seeds until April, let alone start them. The fact is, although many flowers and vegetabies can and should be sown directly into the garden, there are others which will do better if started indoors. They are generally those which need a little longer growing period in which to reach flowering size or else the seeds are so tiny and tender that they weuld likely perish if planted directly into the garden. The major elements needed to achieve success starting seeds in- doors are a good locaticn, suitable containers, sterilized potting mixes, seed and conscientious aftercare. If any one of these elements is ignored, you can kiss success goodbye. A good location for starting seed is a bright window that does Not get excessively warm when the sun shines. A room temperature of 70 to 75°F (21 to 23°C) is best for germinating most seed.
