In recognition of her untlagaing
dedication, the old St. fohn's
Church — which Macdonald
rescued from destruction and had
converted to a theatre — was
named in her honor: the Anne
Macdonald Hall at Presentation
House.

Looking back, she says she felt a
great sense of embarrassment
upon learning of the tribute.

“Iwas dumbfounded,” she
said. ‘For the first time in my life
! couldn't speak.””

As is characteristic of Mac-
donald, taking credit doesn’t come
easily. Even after receiving the
prestigious Order of British Col-
umbia last month, she remains
modest.

“1 feel very humble and proud
that it should be me instead of
people like (North Vancouver
Community Arts Council presi-
dent) Ella Parkinson,’ she says.
“A lot of people deserve what I
got.”

And it’s often difficult to bring
her back to talk about herself.
Macdonald always speaks of
oihers before herself.

And Macdonald has certainly
proved that.

McCallum’s son, Murray
Qates, was stricken with
schizophrenia at ave 20 while
studying fine arts in’ Envland.
He was forced to quit his
studies and enter a mental hos-
pital, but with the help of

medication he was able to finish
his degree.

Currently he lives fives in
Devon but is unable to work.
According to McCallum, he still
loves to paint.
