Each week a reader’s question will be answered by an expert from the British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA). This week’s question is: Could you describe how to jump start the modern car with its black @ box etc.? Sometimes when out fishing in the bush we get this problem. Dean Cummer, West Vancouver A Jump starting a car is a relatively simple procedure. @ This time of year the extra demands on the battery and the cold temperatures often cause failure. Jump starting your car with a good battery can get you out of areal bind. However, safety precautions are a must and to protect the car’s electrical system, the auto manufacturer may also want you to remove a fuse or have some additional instructions done. If you are not sure about the procedure have a mechanic do it for you or call BCAA. SAFETY *Explosive hydrogen gases are present in the vicinity of the battery. Keep sparks or flames away from it. eNever try to jump start a frozen battery or one in which the fluid level is very low. °The battery fluid is a sulfuric acid solution and should not be allowed to come in contact with eyes, skin or painted surfaces of the car. Remove metal jewelry...it could cause an electrical shot circuit. HOW IT’S DONE *Position the vehicles so that the jumper cables reach but the cars do not touch. The risk of explosion can be reduced by removing battery vent caps (does not apply to maintenance-free batteries) and covering with a cloth. eMake sure the ignition switch in both cars is in the ‘‘off’’ position. from the names of all the B.C. jamboree participants. The BCAA School Patrol Jamboree is an annual event organized by BCAA with assistance from local police and school districts around the province. ‘‘These stu- dents have a very important role in’ the community's traffic safety efforts.’’ said =a] OGL, 986-8473 NORTH VANCOUVER "= Arlene Sarjeant, BCAA Ser- vice Centre manager in Park Royal. ‘‘We are pleased to host this event to recognize their contributions to traffic safety throughout the year.’’ For further information contact Arlene Sarjeant, service centre manager, West Vancouver at 922-3361.
