This Jonathan Demme project is
something wild. While in Haiti two
years ago to film a documentary,
Demme was impressed by the rich
musical culture of the country and
began toying with the idea of re-
cording a compilation of Haitian
music. He converted The Neville
Brothers to the cause while doing
some video work for them.
The result is 10 songs spanning
recordea history from 1957 to
1989. The earliest inclusions,
Tchoul No. 3 by Nemours Jean-
Baptiste and Rit Komesyal by
Ensemble Nemours jJean-DSaptiste,
are the kind of hot calypso hip

The French virtuoso guitarist is
often tagged with the kiss-of-death
label New Age Musician, but the
categorization doesn’t sit right.

Algerian-born, Paris-bred Ben-
susan is gifted with an eclectic ear
for musical inspiration and a
glistening one-of-a-kind picking
style. On Spices, the superior of
the two most recently available
releases, Bensusan’s undulating,
electronically-modified acoustic
guitar is happily pressed into the
service of a resonant sound fusion
equal parts jazz, classical and
globe-embracing ethnic excursion.

Spices shows best the depth of
the voice speaking through the str-
ings and includes some intuitive
jazz ensemble work. The cultural
reach is broad: an agile run along
