Children’s death caused by improper restraint hookup

rain or the sun is shining, every
five minutes, somewhere in B.C.,
aaother motor vehicle accident
happens.

If you were involved in an acci-
dent, would your child be correctly
buckled in? You can find cut, rain
or shine, on Saturday, August 26,

as trained volunteers conduct a
free child seat/infant restraint
check.

The free check locared at the
south side of Marine Drive at Park
Royal runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Participating in the event are the
West Vancouver Police Depart-
ment, the RCMP, ICBC, BCAA,
public nurses from the North

B.C. POLICE are asking motorists
to take care on the road as kids
head back to schocl.

This year police will stick with
tradition and step up enforcement
during the back to school period.
Special attention will be placed on
motorists who exceed the speed
limit in school zones.

Those caught will face a $75 fine
in addition to driver penalty
points.

Back-to-schoo!l is a time when
youngsters are often excited and
nervous. They can forget to prac-
tice pedestrian safety when walking
to and from school.

of this situation and drive accord-
ingly.

If you have children starting
school, it is a good idea to walk
with them on the first day. Teach
them to walk, not run.

Show them how to stop, look
and listen before crossing the
street. Get them to wear clothing
that increases their chances of be-
ing seen.

Motorists are asked to slow
down in school zones, watch for
kids getting in and out of cars, and
stop for school buses when their
lights flash. Remember...the kids
are there, so drive with care!

infants and young children were
using infant or child restraints, less
than 40 per cent of the seats were
installed or used correctly.

In June 1989, at Oakridge Can-
tre in Vancouver, a car seat check

was conducted and only 6 per cent
of the seats inspected were correct-
ly installed.

Statistics show that more Cana-
dian children die in automobife ac-
cidents than from any other single
cause. Protection for youngsters is
greatly increased when child seats
are used correctly.
