degrees C. In late May, when the
leaves start to appear, they can be
moved onto the baicony or into the
garden.

Newcomers to the tuberous
begonia scene should remember to
always plant the rough, concave
side upwards and smooth, rounded
side down.

For the surny spots in the
garden, dahlias are an excellent
choice. Few other garden plants
provide as long a show — early
June for some varieties — through
first frost in the late fall, when
most perennials and annuals have
finished flowering. But not all
dahlias are the towering giants
most people usually call to mind.

Small dahiias, such as the
single-flowered Mignon, are equal-
ly well suited to beds and con-
tainers but also do well in the
border. They usually grow to 30 to
50 cm (12 to 20 in.), are available
in ali sorts of colors and flower
profusely.

‘Take the trouble to remove the
withered flowers as they fade and
you can enjoy an even more abun-
dant blooming throughout the
season. Even smaller are the
‘Topmix’ dahlias (20 to 30 cm;
eight to 10 in.) with even smaller
flowers to match.

There are two very special types
of dahlias for the border: collerette
and anemone-flowered. The
former actually have an additional

ring of petals, considerably smaller
than the ordinary petals and often
in contrasting colors, which makes
a very pretty effect. Most reach 75
cm to one metre (30 to 36 in.).

Anemtone-flowered dahlias are
even more remarkable. Their
tubuiar petals are strongly enlarged
and form a disc in the centre of the
flower — a striking image to say
the least. They’ll reach about 30
cm (12 in.) in height. The more
familiar pompon, decorative, cac-
tus and semi-cactus dahlias are
popular as cut flowers and in deep
borders.

Dahlias are easy to grow. Their
soil condition is not crucial, as
long as it is not too wet. Plant
them after the danger of frost has
past. Just dig a hole 15 cm (six in.)
deep and Jay them in with the old
flower stalk pointing upwards.
