HEALTH Minister Peter Dueck and federal Health and Welfare Minister Jake Epp recent- ly announced the development of a survey to determine risk factors of heart disease in British Colum- bians. The British Columbia Heart Health Survey, coordinated by the B.C. Ministry of Health and using ministry-trained staff, will in- vestigate the prevalence and distribution patterns of risk factors of cardio-vascular disease throughout the province. “The valuable information gathered by this province-wide survey will assist in developing programs to help battle one of the leading causes of death in our society,’’ said Dueck. Health and Welfare Canada, through ithe National Health Research and Development Pro- gram, contributed $27,700 toward the development of the survey which will study factors such as high blood pressure, elevated blood cholesterol, smoking, alcohol consumption, and seden- tary lifestyle. The survey will sample 2,200 non-institutionalized residents and provide responses within six age groups from urban centres, medi- um-sized communities and rural areas. Results of the survey, expected next fall, will be used in conjunc- tion with existing information to plan and evaluate public health programs aimed at reducing the risks of heart disease. Heart diseases have ranked as the number one cause of death in British Columbia for the past three years. In 1986, there were 6,297 deaths related to heart disease and a total of 480,335 hospital days were utilized for circulatory-related il- Inesses.
