ah ST, INVITED TO HAWAII NV high school band tunes up for festival IN JUST a few days, the Handsworth Secondary Schcol senior concert band will! jet to Hawaii to perform in the in- vitation-only Pacific Basin Band Festival. “Basically it is a feather in our cap,’’ says Handsworth music director Bob Rebagliati. ‘‘This is the first (music festival) we have been invited to.”’ Performing alongside bands from Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and the United States will be ‘‘a great experi- ence,”’ for the 28-member band. “We've been rehearsing every spare minute — mornings, even- ings, afternoons,’’ explains Rebagliati, who is also referred to as Reb by many of his students. Veterans of numerous festivals, the band has performed to rave reviews across the country and won four gold medals at the Na- tional Festival at Expo 86. Fifteen-year-old percussionist Tony Hewett, one of. the few Grade 10 students in the band, puts in about eight hours of prac- tice a week for the festival. But as most of Hewett’s gear will be supplied for him in Hawaii, he does not have to practice lugg- ing his array of instruments on and off the airplane. By STEPHEN BARRINGTON News Reporter ‘‘Whenever we go to festivals we have to put (instruments) onto a truck and they’re quite cumber- some,”’ he says as he gets ready to leave for a rehearsal. Mark Hewett, 17, good-natured- ly laments the extra practice times imposed by Rebagliati. ‘‘We’ve got practices all week,’’ says the alto saxophone player. “Pye been on tours before but not where we've been invited to participate in an international fes- tival. It’s great — it’s nice to know we're good enough.”’ The seven-day Pacific Basin Band Festival is not a competition as such, but more of what Rebagliati terms as a contest against a high standard of music. “The idea is to see how high we get against that standard of 100 per cent.”’ As a move to foster cultural ex- See Band Page 13 HANDSWORTH SECONDARY Schoo! music instructor Bob Rebagliati (foreground) and the school’s senior concert band squeeze in one more rehearsal be- fore teaving for Hawaii March 22.
