House prices keep rising THE LATEST Home Price Survey by Canada Trust Re- altor confirmed what most of us have known for some time — house prices are ris- ing dramatically in most parts of Canada. The survey compared prices over a 12-month period ending February 28. Major centres in Central Canada produced the largest increases with Metro Toron- to leading the way with an average 31 per.cent. Close behind were Hamilton and Greater Montreal. _ Calgary: was the only ma- jor centre to record a decline at five per cent. Bey. However, John Erickson, senior vice president of real estate services stated that: “Since the start of the year, activity has increased con- siderably in the West. Prices are now starting to pick up there as well.” Forest Hill, in Central Toronto, recorded the larg- est increases and now has the most expensive housing in Canada. A four bedroom executive home increased $125,000 in value to stand at $500,000. Erickson went on to say that: ‘‘declining mortgage rates have certainly been a - major factor as people now can qualify for larger mor- tgages and this increased demand has pushed up prices. This eftect has been tempered in the West and Atlantic Canada by weaker regional economies. Until just recently, people in those provinces have been more cautious but now they are beginning to enter the mar- ket again.”’ Looking to the balance of the year, Erickson sees a marked improvement in both Atlantic Canada and Western markets. For cen- tral Canada, price increases will moderate as more listings come on stream. 25% SOLD sum FIRST WEEK OF OPENING!
