MONITORING THE LIMITS OF RUDENESS

Barge politely into conversations

DEAR MISS MANNERS — I belong to a small communi-
ty church where all of the members are quite close. Fre-
quently, after services, there are friendly conversations,
short greetings, compliments and parting comments.

Many times I find it necessary to
speak to several people before 1
leave, either to ask a question or to
give them information they have
requested of me. When I approach
two people who are involved in a
lengthy conversation, I usually
stand a few feet away, so that it is
obvious I need to speak to them.

I find it annoying when | am ig-
nored and left awkwardly standing
there. On occasion, I have resorted
to “Excuse me, but I need to speak
to you for just a moment,”’ only to
be answered with “OK, just a
minute” and the resumption of

rude, but they don’t seem to be ef-
fective either.

Interrupters do not have the
tight of way. They must therefore
offer those whom they wish to in-
terrupt a choice, which may be ac-
cepted or refused.

The choice you are offering by
standing politely to one side or
saying ‘Excuse me’’ is ‘‘Would
you like to drop what you're doing
and talk to me?"’ The reply you
are getting, which is ‘‘No, we'll
just finish up and ihen get to
you,’ is not rude.

But if you have either emergency
information or answers to their
own requests, you should offer
them the choice between getting
the information now and going on
talking while you leave.

This is done by flashing a hand
to get attention and then saying,
“Excuse me, I’m running off now
— do you have a minute for me to
give you the directions you re-
