10 - Sunday, Sep tember 29, 1985 - North Shore News inquiring reporter by Barrett Fisher DURING the salmon spawning season, fish- ing in the Capilano River is restricted, only allowing native Indians to fish the river. But the native people can only use the fish for | personal consumption — selling the fish is prohibited. Recently, individuals — both native and non-Indian — have been charged with selling the fish. Today’s question is: Should all be allowed to fish | the Cap river? Robert Stewart . North Vancouver I don’t agree with it. There are lots of dead fish laying there that have been gaffed and left lying on the shore. 1 think it’s disgusting. The Indians are the same as us — the same rules should apply to everyone. Lauren Evanow North Vancouver I ‘don’t believe anyone should fish it, if you base it on the reason why the white people aren’t allowed to fish it — to preserve the fish. Jeff Newson North Vancouver Everyone should be allowed to fish it. I like fishing myself and I don’t see who has the right to say who owns the fish. John Rush Kamloops I+ think native people Should fish the river because they have for so long. It's their way. Anyone else who fishes in there should have a licence. Earl Clark Burnaby There shouldn’t be fish- ing allowed at all. If the Indians are abusing the system, then they should be cut off. Taxpayers will have to clean up the mess.
