In spite of their size the wagons will seat five people comfortably . WINTERIZING Keeping costs down ON AT LEAST one day this winter, thousands of motorists will get into their cars only to find they won't start. You don’t have to be one of them, according to BCAA. A little prevention can save you frustration as well as possible repair bills “If you haven't taken your car in for a pre-winter tune- up, do il aS soon as possi- ble,’’ ware, Bob Blair, manager of BCAA’s emergency road service fleet. A good tune-up plus other common-sense precautions will prevent most of the following wet, wintery problems: Dead battery: A weak bat tery can recharge with nor mal orunning in warm temperatures, but it won't recharge when the weather is near freezing In cold and rainy weather you'll probably be running the heater, defroster, rear window defogger, windshicid wipers and hghts. All of these pul an extra drain on the battery. Keep the battery terminals clean and the battery topped up with water. Damp ignition: Chances of running into trouble caused by moisture in the ignition system increase dramatically if the leads running from the distributor cap to the spark plugs are old and cracked, or if your spark plugs are worn. Frozen fuel lines: When the temperature drops below freezing, condensation in the gas line can solidify and pre- vent gas from reaching the engine This problem can be virtually side-stepped by us ing gas-line antifreeze Frozen radiator and engine block: Every year BCAA’s emergency road service drivers find frozen radiators and engine blocks in cars that have hittle or no antifreeze Make sure you use antifreeze to suit your coldest driving destinations Also check radiator hoses and fan belts far cracks of wear and replace them if necessary Frozen doors: Spray door locks with an antifreeze and lubricant compound. Spray rubber mouldings with a silicone lubricant or rubona light coating of vaseline. Tires: Install winter or all- weather tires on the drive wheels. If studs are used on front-wheel-drive cars, they must be on all four tires. Radials are not a substitute for snow ures. “If you have difficulty starting your car, be careful not to crank the starter too long,’’ says Bob Blair, ex- plaining that you could damage the starter and drain the battery. “‘Crank wt for 10-15 seconds only, and if tt doesn’t start, let it sit for at least two minutes to allow the starter to cool,’” he added And don’t keep stepping on the gas because if the car ts nol running, the gasoline ts not being used up and will flood the engine With winter just) around the corner, BCAA recom mends that you get your car ready ahead of time Then when the cold weather comes, you'll have one less thing to worry about eee ee eee ee eee ee es ee ee ee ee North Shore ANU NOGUIDE Repair & Restoration ae? a BCAA Approved ‘‘When quality counts’’ sah ee Why Pay More Undercoating $85.00 Rust-Proofing $95.00 SuperShine $145.00 Steam Cleaning $20.00 Scotch Guard $45.00 (interlor/Exterton “FALL SPECIALS Preserve Your Car!
