Residents of 21 units at the Flamingo Apartments, 145 East 17th, were forced to flee into the early morning darkness Friday after fire broke out in a ground floor storage area. Firemen battled the blaze for more than four hours but were unable to stop” the flames from destroying 12 suites m= the wood framed structure and heavily damag ing others. The Legion stepped into the breach quickly. Drawing on the experience of the Co- quitlam branch of the veteran’s club which aided victims of an apartment fire there, they set in motion the wheels of aid. **We decided to become tn volved,”” says) co-ordinator tom Donnelly, ‘‘masnly because so many people were totalled out *’ Operating first with only word of mouth advertising and then with extensive media coverage, the response to ther efforts quickly grew By Sunday, the Legion was forced to take over the gym nasium of a tocal school to accommodate the clothing, food and furniture that was being donated ‘‘The response has been absolutely fantastic,’’ says Donnelly. ‘‘It’s been beyond belief.”’ **We've had no less than 150 people walk in here with clothes and bedding and they're sull coming,’’ Don- nelly told the News Tuesday morning The response has been so great, he adds, that the main problem the Legion 1s facing is a lack of drivers and trucks to pick up donated items. Donnelly has taken the task of aiding the victums of the fire, which is sall under Investigauion, a step further than simply ‘collecting goods on their behalf. He has talked to the fire victims and assessed = then degrees of need in order to determine “who to bring up fist when the furniture as available’ Donnelly, oa suranee adjuster tently unemployed, is aiding tenants in them insurance claims He credits much of the suc cess of the aid efforts to the help the Legion has receses cd from dozens of agenaes The Legion can be tcached at OBR VT? former oan who is cur also making Label tested A speclal peecoded Lite. stacket owas tested orm Wan nipeg mrarl deserving otic C hewstmas se aserty Cdr tesults Of the test ane assessed a could dead toa wader use ft the program and a costyaccy for the gencral public test poopie cnveclopes atoa bev i bve bought pec pure reduced race and Choke off thre postal couse onthe cnvchope Ptreonapty use of the special caxvechopes af oas hoped mail pte essiig will be speeded ap Results of itv VeSb proper are expected be Pee vbrteercstee cab rte bye Vieunt future Phe test applic onty ‘ Cobest reas ee oe ey Oe 0) Prost Crepe atic cepeortendd ...Glen Eldstrom displays his water and fire damaged photographs and photographic equipment in the rubble of his suite ...
