CS C—C—“‘“C(‘“‘“(;(NCNCNCNC‘CONNNC(C#” Chamber of Commerce rebuts BCGEU OPEN LETTER TO THE BCGEU In a letter to the Campbell River and District Chamber of Commerce Jack R. Adams, assistant to the President of the BCGEU, admonished members of that Chamber for only looking at the dispute in question and not the cause. Further he states and we quote “as a result, I believe that you have litde credibility as an organization, both with your community and on a province wide basis.” The member Chambers of the Province of B.C. take umbrage with the statements made by Mr. Adams. We cannot allow this irresponsible statement to go without comment. The B.C. Chamber of Commerce is represented by volunteers in 86 com- munities throughout B.C., many of whom are active union members. They take great pride in. being responsible and mature citizens of the Provincial Community. They con- tribute countless days of volunteer labor to try to make this an even better Province in which to live. Their record is public and unquestioned. They know full well the ramifications of a legal strike not to mention the hardships caused by irresponsible labor leaders upon the business section in general. In the main, it is they who employ ap- proximately 300,000 of the work force of British Columbia, not the unions. They have the same right as the union to voice their opinion. To receive such immature and childish admonitions from the BCGEU only serves to show what type of leadership the poor dues paying member of that union is receiving, one wonders why they would follow this style of leadership when they would probably be better off by investing their future as a member of their local Chamber. For the edification of the BCGEU, in our opinion, any Chamber and there are many who have voiced their free collective thoughts, should be commended for taking such a vocal role in their respective community. The business person whether large or small is being represented well for less than $100.00 per year on an average. The time is cer- tainly right for organizations such as the B.C. Chamber to make their thoughts known. It is indeed unfortuante that a member of the BCGEU is not being represented by such responsible and dedicated volunteers. _ Mr. Adams has the un- Let SPCA deal with strays Dear Editor: In the present economic climate, too often domestic pets are abandoned and left to survive by any means possible. Has he read columnist Marjorie Nicholls column in the Vancouver Sun of Thursday, September 2, 1982? If that is creditable actions, then we are really in serious trouble. We point out that many Chambers have voiced their respective positions to the Premier of B.C., but to my knowledge, not one Chamber has chosen to become involved with the merits of this legal strike as it is our firm policy not to enter the labor management arena. In our opinion it is sacred ground for the in- volved parties to stand. We do however, reserve the right to bring to the attention of those involved in the dispute and to the general public the hardships that the small and large business alike are facing. We in the Chamber of Commerce Movement are a major responsible voice and will continue to be so. North Van A7 - Wednesday, September 29, 1982 - North Shore News We see statements in the media attributed to the BCGEU, which in our opinion are tantamount to confrontation like this Province has never seen before. Eg: “we'll show em’ who runs this Province”. The B.C. Chamber would like to remind the leaders of this union, that neither they, big business or any vested organization runs _ this Province. The people run this Province and we will work even harder to make sure itis thus. To the members of the union we say ‘keep fighting for your rights’, always pursue what you believe in, but above all, do not allow your credibility to be besmirched by the type of irresponsible, confrontation style leadership you are having to contend with.
