The remaining members of the club - which has seen much of its membership heading for the doors because of the mortgage crisis - are being urged to attend a special meeting set for 8 p.m. tonight (Sunday) at the club to ratify the agreement. According to directors still serving on the board, the credit union has given assurances that the club will remaim open and that all programs currently un- derway will be kept running. Eight directors have already left the board, in what the remaining directors see as a vote of no con- fidence. Resignations were also due to frustrations with dealing with the credit union and to fears of being held personally liable for certain personal claims. About 200 - or almost 20 per cent - members have opted out, leaving the remaining 850 to shoulder the burden of trying to keep the club open. And of these, many have been holding back on paying their dues under what the board of directors describes as “the misconception that to pay their bills is in essence giving money to the credit union.” However, a news letter from those directors points out that such a membership revolt is hurting the club, rather than the financial institution which holds the mortgage on the building. “As a result, our accounts receivable have reached unprecendented levels,” the news letter states, “and the club’s operation is being strangled by lack of cash flow.” And the directors point out: “If the credit union decides to assume Operations the outstanding members’ accounts will By CHRIS LLOYD become their asset and will be vigorously collected.” As -such, they tell members: “It is essential that your accounts are paid immediately.” The financial crisis of the mortgage renewel has been compounded by the property tax bill facing the club. A financing drive which required members to hand over $200 to help meet the tax bill has met with 78 per cent participation. However, those members who did not rally to the cali face punitive action. The directors state that participation in the drive is mandatory and the discipline outlined in their newsletter threatens to further whitde down the membership pumbers. “The board will be discussing suspension of all members not participating in the financial drive or whose account is in arrears,” it states. “Suspension will involve termination of charging privileges and participation in club activities.” Pub staying open later DRINKERS patronizing Queens Cross pub in North Vancouver can now chug the suds for an hour later. North Van District council last week gave approval for the bar to remain open until midmght. Currently the pub = is restricted to operate bet- ween the hours of 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. but council's con- sent cxtending operating hours of the bar means new hours from 10 a.m. to 12 am SUNDAY BRUNCH IS COMING TO TRADER VICS N SEPTEMBER 19th All neighborhood pubs are limited to 14 hours of operation a day. Alderman John Lakes said of the request: “They're responsible commercial citizens and there have been no complaints from residents about noise.” However, Queens Cross’s new hours will be subject to a 60-day trial basis. And if complaints from neighbors are received then it’s back to previous operating hours.
