Thursday, August 20: That
lulu of a storm last night led
to a lot of stubbly chins and
cold cereal for breakfast,
apparently, but what a gift to
gardeners! A super soak.
Friday, August 21: Mention
of the neighbour's
magnificent purple bean
plant in last week's column
brought excited response
from a man long looking for
the purple bean of his youth.
He rhapsodized about its
mealiness, its perfection
when canned, and described
barren years of searching
fruitlessly for seeds. It was a
distinct thnll to be a par-
uucipant in uniting a grower

and a lover.

Saturday, August 22:
Bemused farmer discovers
odd-shaped tomatoes
hanging on some of his
vines. Much like little light-
globes, they turn out to be
Romas, dear to the hearts of
all who make spaghetti sauce
— they “cook up” much
better than the orthodox
species. Speaking of cooking
up, took some chard home
to the steamer, and ate 1 all
up with butter and a rub of
dill weed. Ah, bliss.

his advice. My garden being
but a cabbage-throw from
the railroad tracks, what
could be neater? Bit hard to
pull out, mind you.
