Soon hour concert senes featuring tyre soprano Mactleone Sedimau and pranit Renneth Johnson. jan. 22, 1-2 p.m, in WORK BY Lori Goldberg. phat Nai tucente Window dressing art HE RECENT $1.3- million purchase of a Barnet Newman painting by the National Gallery of Canada and Sotheby’s $17-miilion sale of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers confirm the accuracy of a claim made by the cele- brated Australian art critic, Robert Hughes, that art is now esteemed “‘for its convertibility to cash.”’ * The art world is currently im- mersed in a sea of buying and selling, one in which culture is reduced to a commodity judged in terms of its monetary worth. This has generated a dilemma that all serious contemporary ar- tists presently face: How to keep their heads above the waves, thereby preserving the esthetic integrity of works of art and the independent spirit of the artistic enterprise. The North Shore Arts Commis- sion recently iaunched itself inte these murky waters with a shor window exhibition of art works that was part of the city-wide First Night celebrations. intended to function as a tem- porary “street gallery,’’ the show was designed to meet cwin goals: Promote the “unique character of the Lonsdale retail community, and ... all that the visual arts community has to of- er.” ARCHIE GRAHAM arts critic As a first attempt, the show was a brave and innovative ef- fort. It helped to provide artists with an alternative exhibition space to the established galleries and museums. It also brought art, literally speaking, closer to home, or at least, onto the streets where a potentially large au- dience would be more likely to see it. Some of the works on view were intellectually stimulating and visually arresting: Nicole Dextras’ ironic paper sculptures at the Paper Go Round, Sudasi Gardner’s Tarot-inspired painted quilts at the North Shore Arts Commission office, and Lori Goldberg’s childlike oil and pastel works at Ceramic Tile. But Goldberg’s mini-show ex- emplifed how difficult and risky it i5 to realize the task undertaken by the North Shore Arts Com- mission: Her work was among a number of serious and compell- ing pieces that were ineffectually showcased or significantly com- promised by the competing in- terests of the Lonsdale retail set- ting.
