WV couple’s cycle tour aims io inspire Bob Mackin Sports Reporter bmackin@nsnews.com IN 1970, Brock Tully thought he was embarking on a ove-of- a-kind solo bicycle journey around North America. Then a student of psv- chology and physical educa- tion at the University of B.C., Tully was disheartened with the malaise that beset society at the end of the tumultuous ’60s. His two- wheeled odyssey introduced him to people in the U.S. and Canada who shared his ideals and wanted to make the world a kinder place. His optimism was restored. Little did he know, 30 years later he would recycle the route on one kind bike expedition with his wife and supporters. The West Vancouver native and wife Wilma Fuchs hit the read Feb. 26 from downtown Vancouver and will cover 16,000 kilometres (10,000 miles) over the next seven months in Cycling for Kindness: A Journey to Join and Touch Hearts. . They're heading down the west coast to southern California, east across the southern U.S. then north to New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario via the eastern seaboard. They'll dip below the Great Lakes before cycling across western Canada. The entourage is expected to return to Vancouver Sept. 17 — well before the first World Kindness Day on Nov. 13. Tully and his group want to collect tales of one million random acts of kindness — “one (s)mile at a time”, as he says — in the re-enact- ment of his epic 1970 cycling trip. That trek spawned the best-selling Reffections series of books; this one is going to culminate in the ‘Cyclopedia of Kindness, which will be published by Canari Press in Berkeley, Calif. UBC to host Canadian Ultimate frisbee meet THE Canadian Ultimate frisbee championships _are coming to the University of B.C. in July. Seventy teams from across the country will compete July 27 to 30 in five divisions: junior, open, women’s, masters and co-ed, Uitimate is played on a football-sized field with seven players aside. It combines elements of several team sports and is played by 2.5 miilion people worldwide — including 2,000 in the Lower Mainland. Approximately 58% of players in Canada are male, while ‘42% are female; 43% of the players are in the 24 to 28 age group.
