The following tips were provided by North Vancouver City Fire and Rescue for your safety. Did You Know That: 1. It is iflegal for anyone under the age of 18 to pur- chase or use fireworks other than sparklers. 2.. Fireworks are legaliy available for sale one wee prior to Halloween. 3. Firecrackers are illegal except by special permit for’ ethnic or religious celebra- tion. Permits must be obtained from the Federal Explosives Branch. 4. A bucket, large box or wheelbarrow filled with earth or sand makes « good firing base to secure fire- works before lighting. 5. Long fireworks like roman candles should be buried half their length before lighting. 6. Never hold fireworks in your hand when lighting them. : 7. Have a fire extinguish- er, a garden hose or large bucket of sand or water available at the firing site. 8. Read. instruc- tions on cach piece of fireworks so you know how it should be fired. 9. Even for back- yard fireworks, a spectator area should be designat- ed at least 20 metres away from the firing _ site. Children and pets are to be kept out of this area, 10. Dispose of spent fire- works in a container of water. 11. Do NOT attempt to re-light a piece that does not go off.
