Wednesday, May 19, 1993 - North Shore News - 9 ° oots of the Left stomping on freedom THE JACKBOOTS of the Left scored a victory recent- ly over in Gastown. Mot that you would know if, because strong-arm tactics by “anti-eracists’’ and other pure people don't always make headlines, H the right-wingers mounted even a fraction of (he kind of ac- tivity that] am about to describe, this country’s frone pages and TV screens would be full of sketches of men in white hoods. Bul the ather side's terror tactics see to be OR. For me, the story began when | flicked on the BCTY news and save a guy pianed against a wall by Chree toughs, owas fad Cyllorn, who runs The Pro-Cult Institute, a smal right-wing orginization that operates — or did operate — fron a Water Street address, A gang of Trotskvites (which is to say Communists) were roughing people up. The police were there but didn't seem to be doing much, although in the end a few rowdies were taken into custody, The occasion of this melee was a meeting in Cyllarn's rented premises at which the speaker was Ron Gostick, the Albertan who heads the Canadian League of Rights, Gostick is in his 70s and much vilified by the liberal media. But he frightens me not at all. He is a monarchist, an old-style Social Crediter and an occasional critic of Zion. In short, he is po- litically incorrect. His subject at the meeting was “referendum and recall." Really inflammatory stuff, The scum that floated in were mostly young. And as CyNorn put it, ‘‘they were pros,’’ some of whom bravely punched an elderly man. Also according to Cyllorn, members of the Jewish ‘‘gay’’ community were on hand. One was jumping up and down witha placard yelling ‘Vancouver is a Jewish town’'; a Jewish lesbian OEE TR PRAT ePIC INET Oe ST Doug Collins = BNO : was sereaming “Vancouver is a gay town." Three big negroes were also in the mob, one of whom struck Cyllarn in the face white --- claims Cyllorn — the police did vothing. He was also sprayed with yellow paint. Cyllorn says there were about 14 policemen in attendance and that when he complained about their inactivity he was told by the inspector in charge that they didn't want to interfere with the demonstration. Tc was a social inatter, he wis told, and to that extent nat police business, A bystander asked a cop what was going on and was told that he was looking at LS. Consignment Plus Boutique “democracy in action,” Cyllorn asked the inspector whether he would think it was on- ly a social matter’ if ciff-ralt attacked people outside a locil synagogue, The inspector said he wasn't going to get inte that kind of argument, If the inspector did take that position (he has not been availible for camment) it shows that the cops have been bullied into pric- tising a great deal af political cor- reciness, Hardly to be wondered at, really, since every time they come up against ethnic cringe they are denounced as racists. In the inspector's absence, a police spokesman told me the purpose of the arrests was to prevent further breaches of the peace.’ But no charges were daid, When [pointed out that Cyllorn and Co. were at the receiving end and obviously had no interest in staging a violent incident against themselves he had nothing more to say. This matter ritises some basic questions. UW self-help isto be the rule, ts i OK for the targets of left-wing letrorism to raise their own private armies in order to defend themselves? What are the rales of the game? We know, of course, that if right-wingers did raise defence squads they would be at the wrong end of the media coverage — “racists, white supremacists, skinheads,"* ete. 10% cH Lynda and Ilika are pleased to annaunce the opening of this new boutique. \#HO1A 1124 Lonsdale Ave., N.Van. 988-0631 (next door to N.S.
