Puttering around a relaxing way to end trip

WHEN I re-read last weck’s diary 1 realized that both of
us were showing distinct signs of travel fatigue.

TRAVEL WISE

All of us can develop this bur-
nout, but the trouble is that we
don’t recognize it at the time.

Looking dack, I can remember
snapping at Brian, “If you wanted
to get the damn van checked why
didn’t you do it while } was writ-
‘ing — instead of staring at a mute
Tv?"

Fortunately, we had planned to
take it easy the last week — a few
days in Reno and at least two
days on the Oregon coast wat-
’ ching the waves.

It’s also a good idea to plan a
short haul for your last day —
who needs to arrive home dead
tired?

Instead of sightseeing, we
gambled and generally pottered
“around.

Instead, we ended up in 2 small
‘qnotel across the street. It was
clean, relatively quict, but the air
conditioner nearly drove me nuts

‘acted up and Brian got a cold.

Reno broke all previous heat
’ pecords while we were there with
“temperatures in the mid-90s. We
hardly noticed as we glued
ourselves to the green felt.

There’s another new game in

town. Be sure to try ‘‘Triple-
Chence 21°’ if Blackjack is your
yame.
_ However, watch the game
carefully before you sit down.
There’s no sense in going into
details here, but briefly, the player
gets one hand and the dealer gets
three

To play, the player must ante
on at least’ two hands.

Hint: It is unwise to hit 12s and
13s because if you break you lose
all bets.

The ‘clubs are just breaking in
“the dealers, and it’s not an easy
game to deal. In fact, we ended
up coaching some of the dealeis
— at their request! It’s fun to

play but not with any hope of
breaking the bank.

As for food, we normally avoid
buffets, especially family-style
ones such as Circus-Circus.

However, after more than three
weeks on the road we found that
an inexpensive meal ($2/$3/$4 for
breakfast, lunch and dinner)
suited us well.

We overloaded on fresh fruit,
vegetables and unlimited quan-
tities of milk. This sort of selec-
tive dining is impossible to do
when ordering from a menu.

And for a travel-stained vehicle
Reno has the best car wash in the
world,

Look for the Exxon station,
about four miles south, on your
right, on South Virginia Street.

headed back to the casinos in fine
form and proceeded to subsidize
Nevada’s economy.

drive the traditional routes home

in.

As most of the tour buses go,
we've always driven 4395 towards
Susanville but cut off on A-3

towards Alturas, California and
Klamath Falls, Oregon.

This time we carried on
Susanville, taking Highway #44
north which links up with #89,
bringing you out to I-5 at Mount
Shasta.

One of our reasons for choosing
this route is the scenery — the
road winds through forests and
valleys and beats the countryside
around Alturas all to hell.

One warning — take the deer
crossing signs to heart. We saw
more than one bounding through
the underbrush. They have com-
plete contempt for vehicles.

We stayed in Mount Shasta,
another Best Western.

The motel was so secluded I left
the door open all night and what
a treat the mountain air was over
air conditioning.

Besides, we left ail our money
in Reno.

The restaurant isn’t bad at all

and the service is excellent. We
had small tenderloins and salad
for about $20.

We headed north on 1-5 with
to plans. Newport, on the Oregon
coast, seemed logical, so we turn-
ed west on #34 to Corvallis and
then #20 to Newport.

That's some road! It takes at
least 1% hours to go about 50
