A $280,000 contract has been awarded io Jaco Powerlines Ltd. of Campbell River for overhead conversion work on the island. Approximately 200 transformers will be changed to dual voitage units, and most of the existing in- sulators on poles and crossarms will be replaced. The work is expected to be completed in June. - Underground cable upgrading and substation modifications will be clone at the the same time. In addition, « $35,000 tree-trimming program will be carried out with the overhead conversion work. In total, approximately $1.5 million will be spent by Hydro cn changes to the electrical system serving Bowen Island. The work could result in short power interruptions. When all the upgrades. have been completed, power to the island will Se cut temporarily to allow for a switchover to the new system. (VPC) official. The ban, originally planned to begin April 1, was enforced March 18 when investigators discovered Asian gypsy moth egg masses aboard eight grain ships in the harbor. The ban covers the hatching period of a pest feared to be a threat to focal trees and plants. Said Jordan, ‘‘Since egg masses are deposited on protected vertical surfaces, such as huge ships, the situation becomes enormously complicated. A shipping embargo could in- volve about 1,000 deep-sea vessels and affect major Canadian ex- ports such as grain and lumber. Although Asian gypsy moth egg masses have been found locally on ships, they have yet to be found on fand. The gypsy moth hunters unveil- ed a new weapon in the hunt last week when a dog trained to sniff out the moths was put on the egg-mass trail. But the Labrador retriever from Oregon state found no egg masses, so he was shipped back to Portland. The aerial spraying program, scheduled to start some time later this mouth, is being challenged in federal court by spray opponents. Meanwhile, some Saltspring Islanc residents are wondering why military helicopters sprayed parts of the island Marck 13. According to a Health Action Network Society spokesman, sev- eral people suffered adverse allergic reactions after two un- raarked helicopters flew over the island in grid patterns to drop a substance from ‘‘belly dumpers’’ slung under each helicopter.
