MLA wants to see changes on Bowen Island ferry route WEST VANCOUVER- Garibaldi MLA David Mit- cheli has called for changes in the operation of the B.C. Ferry Corp’s. (BCFC) Bowen Island route. By Surj Rattan News Reporter ‘*After receiving representation from numerous residents of _ Bowen Island, and following con- suitation with officials of B.C. Ferries, it is clear to me that there is both room for improvement and a need to try some new ideas,’’ said Mitchell. Mitchell has made his recem- mendations to BCFC president and chief executive officer Frank Rhodes. He called for: @ the appointment of an in- dependent auditor to conduct a safety audit on the Bowen Island ferry run, the findings of which should be made public; @ an open house held by the BCFC on Bowen island which would allow residents to voice their concerns directly to senior BCFC managers; @ regular communications with Bowen Island residents to be managed by BCFC managers, not head office public relations staff; © bicycles to be allowed on BOWEN ISLAND Bowen Island ferries for no charge in order to iake some of the pressure off the increasing fQumbers of motor vehicles carried on the ferry and to encourage en- vironmentally-friendly transporta- tion alternatives; ® a review of fares on the Bowen Island ferry. Mitchell said the ferry has one of the highest fares for a minor route and that consideration should be given to reducing fares for foot passengers. “A renewed emphasis on open communication and public ac- countability should be the top priority for the corporation,” said Mitchell. ‘“‘A special emphasis must be placed on improving the important relationship with Bowen Island residents.” He also encouraged the Bowen Island Transportation Committee to play a more active role in help- ing to manage the relationship with the BCFC and to improve communications among Bowen Island residents. “The role of the transportation committee should be expanded so that it can serve as an advisory body and focal point for key transportation issues that will shape the future of Bowen {sland,”’ said Mitchell.
