42 - Sunday, November 25, 1990 ~ North Shore News Joy Metcalfe JOY TELLS ALL LAST FRIDAY night at the Hotel Vancouver 450 guests in beautiful attire braved the downpour to attend the annual Consular Ball at the Hotel Vancouver. Because of the variety of inter- national guests, the dress code tanged from red serge to white tie and tails, from saris to Japanese kimonos, but ribbons, medals and sequins were definitely the order of the evening. Sol, Gen. Russ Fraser and his vivacious wife, Joan ,were there, he tuxedoed, she wearing a new black sequin and pink taffeta original from Exquisite Boutique in Park Royal. Frobably mort - gaged the house to buy it!... Speaker of the House, Stephen Rogers, who'd rather have beeref motorcycling, I'm sure, was there with Valerie Richards and chatting with B.C. Transit’s Stuart Hodgson and his wife. Stephen says that he’s still ‘‘Honorable’’ until the end of December... Someone who could model for Gentleman's Quarterly anytime in his evening duds is Rick Hansen’s father-in-law, Patrick Reid... The North Shore was well rep- resented by Four Seasons hotelier Ruy Paes-Braga aud his sprightly spouse, Debbie. She was in a very demure, slim, black dress with puritan lace collar. Sitting with them was Continen- tal importers’ Jose Valagao and his trim wife, cooking school whiz, Caren McSherry. Caren was in black as well but backless black — almost to her tailbone!... Alex MacDonald, the former NDP Attorney General in Dave Barrett’s government, showed a fine leg in his MacDonald tartan kilt. But my Scottish spies tell me he was wearing the large safety pin clipped too high on the kilt... The RCMP’s man responsible for the diplomatic corps, Don Maclay, was in his red dress uniform — including his spurs! He promised to take those off later as they do interfere with tripping the light fantastic. They have a tendency to catch on filmy gowns! He was also wearing his St. John of Jerusalem medal, one of many of the same order attending — like Tyrol’s Emerson Short, who was in his mess kit regalia (a short red serge jacket, vest and dress trousers) while wife Fran glowed in sequins. There were seven gentlemen in- vested into the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem that after- noon at Christ Church Cathe- drat... Speaking sequins, one of the loveliest gowns was worn by the slim, blonde Barbara Fletcher, who discovered it at The Bay!... Harbour Ferries’ Graham Clarke was making his first for- mal appearance at the Consular Bait as the Honorary Consul for Austria. Austria hasn't had an honorary consul in Vancouver for years — not since the death of the wealthy John "echt. And yes, Graham is definitely keeping an ear tuned to the Stena Saga... Arthur Knight, West Van’s retired shopping plaza developer, was dancing up a storm with wife, Marjorie, his McKenzie tartan kilt flying. Arthur is also the Hon. Lt. Col. of the Seaforth Highlanders... The wife of the Japanese Con. Gen. looked so petite — so doll- like in her charming traditional Japanese kimono... Wealthy developer Chuck Con- naghan brought along his attrac- tive daughter, Sue, to the do. But he didn’t wear either of his medals — the Queen’s Medal or the Papal Medal. His personal view is that medal flaunting is pure nonsense. I didn’t ask him what he thought apovt spurs!... Hotel Vancouver’s general manager and VP of CP hotels, Michael Lambert, and his wife, Sally, attended the festivities, Michael sporting his St. Lazarus Medal. He’s just returned from a business trip to Tokyowhere he claims they have the best beef in the world!... The friendly fellow with the flashy smile, Steven Funk, was there with wife, Paige. He’s the dentist who put his tools away to make money!... Someone who couldn't get there was Vancouver's hostess with the mostest, Jackie Houston. And the reason is that she’s in hospital suffering from gall bladder prob- lems. This may put a crimp in her annual ladies’ Christmas lIun- cheon, a highlight of the festive season which is scheduled for ear- ly December... The surprise of the evening was that Brian and Libby Watkins did get there! Brian was formerly the British Con. General in Van- couver, the post now capably handled by the charming Tony Joy. Brian is now the High Commis- sioner to Swaziland in southern Africa. His wife, Libby, had broken her leg there, falling off a horse. Her cast has naw been removed and they were both able to dance around the floor on Fri- day evening. He’s a superb dancer!
