By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporter A North Shore highlight was - provided by badminton veteran 65-year-old Dave Adams of West Vancouver who came away from the four-day tourney with a gold and a silver medal. Adams, who plays out of Hollyburn, teamed up with Barry Ursell of Winnipeg to win the gold in men’s over-65 doubles where they defeated Bill Thom of California and West Vancouver's Simmy Forsythe. In mixed doubles, Adams team- ed with Lee Calvert of California for a silver, advancing to the finals before losing to defending 1988 and 1989 champs Claire Lovett and Ursell. The names of the over-65 cate- gory winners were inscribed on a memorial plaque for Ken Grierson, Adams’ long-time doubles partner who died last year after contrac- ting legionnaires’ disease. Five years ago, Adams and Grierson won the over-60 Cana- dian men’s doubles and the World Masters doubles in succession. Adams attributes his badminton stealth to an early retirement, “I had the good sense to retire early so I could devote more time to badminton and fishing,”’ Adams said, adding that he works out three times a week and prac- tices badminton at least twice a week. Other world-class players of note at Hollyburn include Chan- narong Ratanaseangsuang and Jim Powell, both of Alberta, who won the men’s over-50 doubles by upsetting the current World Men’s Doubles Over-50 title holders Ab- dul Shaikh of Vancouver and Jim Poole of California.
