SPORTS Southern Straits off to slow start THE SOUTHERN Straits Sailing Classic left Dundurave Pier begrudgingly on Good Friday. Scheduled to leave at 10:30 a.m., zero winds delayed the start until noon and the longest of the three courses, the 129-mile race, was the slowest in the 22 years the race has been going. Most yachts took more than seven hcurs to sail the first 25-mile leg up to the Halibut Bank mark. A tight to moderate westerly gave this year’s competitors a spinnaker run down the Strait to Alden Bank off Bellingham. The next leg had them tacking back up against the moderate westerly to round Halibut Bank again before turning south to the finish. On Saturday night winds were light and even flat calm off Bowen Island. Then a squamish coming down Howe Sound gave gusty winds until the last few miles to the Point Atkinson finish where the first yachts finished 9 p.m. Satur- day with yachts still coming in Sunday morning. Skippered by Bill Lenihan, Pad- dy Wagon was first in the 38-yacht PHRF division to finish the long course as well as the first in cor- rected time. In the IOR division, Bull Buchan’s Sachem won the race while Lucille with Kevin Stamper’s crew was the first IOR yacht to cross the finish. Skipper Sandy Huntingford’s Kydaka placed the highest for the race host West Vancouver Yacht Club coming in fourth in the IOR division. In the shorter 77-mile course, Merry ’Ell skippered by Trevor Hayward was the first to finish. Hoilyburn awaits Richmond THE NORTH Shore Winter Club and the West Vancouver Tennis Club were both defeated in the first round of the B.C. Club Team Tennis championships, but third seeded Hoilyburn Country Club is waiting in the wings to meet the Richmond Country Club. The Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club embarrassed West Van 7-1 while NSWC lost 6-2 in a series with Vancouver’s Ar- butus Club. Richmond, which edged the Burnaby Tennis Club in a dramatic second tie-breaker match, is scheduled to meet Hollyburn in the second round. Hollyburn received a first round bye and must beat Richmond and the winner of the Blue Mountain Racquet. Club (Coquitlam) and the Hazelrnere Golf and Tennis Club (Surrey) series to secure a berth in the provincial finals, May 12 and 13 at NSWC.
