Noth Shore Credit Union is committed to helping its members meet that challenge by making available bursaries. The bursaries are offered in honor of two individuals who contributed Significantly toward the growth of our Credit Union — Sid Butterfield, president of North Shore Credit Union from 1969 to 1981, and Tom Dearlove, treasurer of the Credit Union 1942 to 1955. Each man also played a major role in laying the foundation for a thriving provincial Credit Union movement. Mr. Dearlove was a charter member of the Vancouver Co- operative Association, now amalgamated with Metro Co-op Services. He also served as anofficer of the Treasurer’s Association and pioneered the Coal Worker's Co- operative. . Mr. Butterfield served on the North Shore Credit Union Board of Directors for more than 15 years and worked with the B.C. Advisory Board for the Co-operative Trust Company of Canada. Bursaries available through North Shore Credit Union are administered by the Credit Union Foundation of B.C. The foundation handjies 27 funds, trusts and memorials, including the Sid Butterfield Honorary Trust and the Tom Dearlove Memorial. The foundation disbursed over $50,000 last year through local credit unions throughout the province. Students received an average $400 each in 1988. Disbursements provide assistance to B.C. resident students in need of financial assistance to pursue vocational, technical, or academic training within the province. Money is also made available to mature students attempting to upgrade basic education and skills needed to enter the work force. Cycle Safety FOURTH GRADE siudents from Upper Lynn Elementary School fearn bicycle safety techniques. A special program organized by Jim Robertson (Vancouver Safety Council) together with the North Shore Safety Council teaches kids hand and traffic signals, defensive riding skills and general awareness.
