Last-mi nute gifts for bookish types WHILE SOME readers are no doubt sitting back rather smugly right now, secure in the fact that Christmas presents have not only been selected but bought and wrapped, the majority of us are probably facing the same last-minute, gift-giving quandary we inflict on ourselves every year. You'll therefore be relieved to know that there actually exists a place where something special can be found for everyone on your Yuletide list: the local bookstore. MIKE STEELE book reviewer This week and next, BOOKS NOW will offer thumbnail-sketch reviews of books for all ages and interests that could be the perfect stocking-stuffer solution to your problems (stockings not included). For fans of the off-beat and the decidedly weird, Dougias Adams, author of The Hitch Hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, has a fantastically bizarre new offering, The Long Dark Tea-Time Of The Soul (Stoddart; 246 pp.; $23.95 in hardcover). Adams’ strange brand of humor is worn this time around by Dirk Gently of the Dirk Gently Holistic Detective Agency, an unlikely sleuth petrified of the contents of his own fridge, who reluctantly finds himself working for a client who is convinced that he is about to be murdered by a scythe- wielding monster with a link to the ancient Norse gods. | PIZZA & CHINESE FOOD © TAKE OUT® DELIVERY @ 1985-8888) CHRISTMAS SPECIAL DINNER 4 ¢ Chicken Chow Mein Mushroom Fried Rice © Beef Chop Suey ° Sweet & Sour Pork ¢ Aimond Chicken * Deep Fried Shrimp * Bonus Free Pizza Coupon ALL FOR os i © FREE DELIVERY (within 3 mi. radius) EXPIRES DEC. 30/88 Not valid with other offerings Is he right? Does detective Dirk solve his fridge problem? The Long Dark Tea-Time Of The Soul not only has the answers to these compelling questions in great gift form but the recipient should be grateful enough to fet you borrow itin January. Outdoor enthusiasts face a bewildering choice this year, given the profusion of excellent coffee table books out there, but here are two suggestions that might simplify things a bit. Surely there is no more beautiful a book available on the natural wonders of a Canadian region than Pat and Rosemary Keough’s sumptuous, large-format book, The Nahanni Portfolio (Stod- dart/Nahanni Production; 179 pp.; $65). Printed on the heaviest stock of any coffee table work I’ve seen this year, this is a publicist’s dream. The Nahanni Portfolio would be a gift that would be treasured for years to come. Also a very striking work for the quality and subject of its photographs is Candace Savage's Wolves (Douglas & Mc!ntyre; 159 pp.; $35). This too is a large-format book, featuring an incredible gallery of wolf photographs whose diversity is breath-taking. Wolves is the most impressive book on canis lupus published to date and sure to elicit a chorus of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ from everyone who sees it. . The next book is the BOOKS NOW Canadian History Award winner of the year (or would be if we had such a prize): Lords of the Line by West Vancouver’s writing team, David Cruise and Alison Griffiths. Lords of the Line (Viking; 486 pp.; $25) is a definitive, anec- dote-packed history of the Cana- dian Pacific Railway and the men who not only created it but used (and abused) its enormous power. Despite the efforts of other his- torians — such as Pierre Berton with The National Dream and The Last Spike — never before has this intimate and interesting a book been written on the politics, greed, vanity and manipulation that surrourded the CPR and its top executives. From documented evidence that the CPR bought federal! elections (and a prime minister) to the true account of how one company See Books Page 51 46” TV in stock 34” giant screen KV27TX20 — 28" STEREO MONITOR/RECEIWER 28° Stereo High Resolution Advanced Picture in Picture To Let You Watch 2 Channels At One Time.
