FOLLOWING MONTHS of sometimes bitter debate, West
Vancouver School Board voted to remain a member of the
B.C. School Trustees Association for at least another year.

Last year the board voted to
leave the BCSTA by June 30, 1987
to protest what the board consid-
ered to be poor management and
fiscal irresponsibility.

But at Monday’s meeting, board
member Michael Smith said: ‘1
think the BCSTA (executive) has
lifted its head from the sand.

“Let's tell them we're prepared
to take one last kick at the cat.’"

Smith said continuing member-
ship in the BCSTA should depend
upon obvious improvements in
services and policy.

Board member Jean Ferguson
said as a result of provincial gov-
ernment bills 19 and 20, the West
Vancouver board needed to be an
association member more than
ever in order to receive informa-
tion and collective support during
the coming year of possible labor
turmoil.

Margot Furk, a board member
and vehement BCSTA opponent,
said the easiest way to improve the
association is to withdraw, and

return to the organization if the
desired improvements occur. Six
B.C. boards have already
withdrawn from the BCSTA this
year in protest.

“There is nothing preventing us
from rejoining,”’ she said before
losing the vote 4-1. ‘I think the
organization is out of control.”

After the vote Furk said
although she opposed the vote, she
was glad the district remained a
member so that she could return to
the association’s annual general
meeting next year and ‘‘give the
executive hell’.

Members of the BCSTA execu-
tive came to a board meeting this
fall attempting to convince the
board to remain in the association.
The final debate on membership
was delayed over a month so that
all board members could attend
the discussion.
