Month.

With winter just around
the corner with its more ex-
treme driving conditions,
October is the time to take
your car in for a tune-up
and winterizing.

Most cars operate under
the most difficult stop-and-
go driving conditions and
winter causes more wear and
tear, particularly on the bat-
tery.

The

BATTERY CHARGE

Starting a cold engine
takes a lot of charge out of a
battery. Recharging is much
slower, especially if you are
using electrical accessories:
such as lights, radio, heater
and rear window defroster.
Under severe conditions,
especially in winter, the bat-
tery may get a little weaker
every day until eventually it
is no longer able to start the
engine.

Here’s how to overcome
these problems:

Change the oi] more often
than is recommended if

driving conditions are par-
ticularly severe. Change the
oil filter with every oil
change. The cost is small
compared to that of a major
engine overhaul.

DANGEROUS GASES

Have the exhaust system
inspected at each oil change.
Dangerous gases can escape
from almost invisible holes.
Consider replacing a defec-
tive muffler, tail pipe or ex-
haust pipe with one carrying
a lifetime guarantee. If you
keep the car long enough to
collect on the guarantee you
will be dollars ahead.
