Al2 - Sunday, July 29, 1984 - North Shore News DOBERMAN SHOT WV woman will sue to see police files A WEST VAN- COUVER woman says she will launch legal ac- tion against the West Vancouver Police tomorrow in attempts to obtain access to in- formation on the shooting of her dog by a West Vancouver po- liceman. By MARK HAMILTON The dog, a_ four-and-a- half-year-old Doberman, was shot on a West Van street last Saturday while owner Barbara Thompson was dining at Earl’s Tin Pal- ace restaurant. Since then efforts by Thompson, friend Gary Engblom and lawyer Henry Sarava to get access to the police files has been thwarted. According to Thompson and Engblom the dog, Skeeter, was left in an open convertible while Thompson dined at Ear!l’s Tin Palace. For some reason the dog leapt out of the ear — ‘“‘he had to have been provoked and angry at something,”’ says Thompson — and bit two people. Thompson and Engblom said from what they can determine one of those bit- ten received scratches on one arm and another had a pant leg ripped. ‘*The injuries cannot have been too bad,’ says Engblom. ‘‘We’ve been told that the peopie that were at- tacked went in and had their dinner.”’ Again Engblom according to and Thompson, a . al photo submitted SKEETER, a trained Doberman, was shot by a West Van- coaver police officer tast weekend. Owner Barbara Thomp- son wants to know why. police were called and an of- ficer arrrived. The two can find no evidence that the of- ficer entered the restaurant to attempt to find out the ex- tent of the injuries or the ownership of the dog Engblom and Thompson say the police officer was unable to find the dog on nearby streets but spotted him and gave chase when he returned to the parking lot Pool time is here! The officer in question reluctantly shot the dog, said the spokesman, after he was attacked while attempting to coax the dog into the back of a polhce car in order to take it to the SPCA. “He had no alternative but to shoot,’’ the spokesman said. Thompson and Engblom aren't convinced. Lawyer Sarava, who could not be reached for comment prior to deadline, has been work- ing on their behaif this week, talking to police officials and municipal repre- sentatives in attempts to get a look at the police files. Sarava, says Thompson, has ‘‘got the royal run- ground’ *, leading to. her decision to take legal action. According to Engblom, he and Thompson will be satisfied if the police report bears out what police are saying about the incident. “If Skeeter attacked peo- ple and injured them, we'd be the first to want action taken,’”’ says Engblom. ‘‘But I] think the officer over- reacted, } don't feel he was justified.”’ Says Engblom, the only way he and Thompson can know for sure is through the police files.
