GIRLS BASKETBALL ITS NEVER too late to become a champion, as the Handsworth senior girls basketball team discovered when it won the North Shore ttle in one of the most exciting tournaments’ in recent years. The win marks the first tume Handsworth has earned the championship since it first began 24 years ago. Under the leadership of new coach Gene Mogat, the team consistently finished second in the standings throughout the season and was strong enough to come back after a heartbreaking two-point loss in the first final to crush Hillside 47-28 in the match game. Molgat’s year with the Royals will be a hard one to top. It was his first year of coaching girls’ basketball after 20 years of working with boys’ football and basketball teams. In the final played last Wednesday, Feb. 16, Mary Shaughnessy led the Royals with 22 points with Sheila Jones contributing 11. Lisa Craig earned eight for the Highwaymen.
