From coast to coast communities will be holding the second annual Terry Fox Run with sponsored entrants of all ages and conditions raising further funds to aid cancer research. On the North Shore the run starts from Park Royal at 9:00 p.m. with registration at 8:00 p.m. Participants can also pre-register by calling Frank Kurucz (922-1211) or Liz McDonald (929-7314). Terry, the 22-year-old Coquitlam boy who had already lost a leg to cancer, raised nearly $24 million during the summer of 1980 when he set out to run across Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific. By the time he was forced to abandon the run at Thunder Bay due to a resurgence of his cancer condition, he had already become a national hero. The remaining nine months of his life brought him the highest honors the country can bestow upon a citizen -- including the Order of Canada and a mountain nmamed for him by the B.C. government. After a gallant struggle against the disease he had dedicated himself to fight on behalf of all sufferers, Terry died in June 1981. From small beginnings in the agency’s community work and in the parent education program, the ‘drop-in centres now number seven, opening once or twice a week and are used by 500 families and 1,000 children. While the children enjoy supervised play, parents meet informally over a cup of coffee. Sometimes they invite a speaker, but generally the program is un- structured, the goal being to help people make some good friends in bourhood. their neigh- In the playroom, however, activities are planned and the little ones are Kept busy. For many it is their first opportunity to play with other children of their age. Volunteers are needed both to assist in the playroom and to help with the parents’ program. In the playroom a paid supervisor needs up to three assistants. Their job is to involve the children in activities and keep a caring watch on them.
