Dear Editor. It is most unfortunate that information such as that contained in Mr. Lewis’ letter with the heading “Hospital Wastes Thousands” is distributed in the printed form. Many of the readers no doubt wonder about its validity and at a time when hospitals are already under attack such information does [ttle to help our cause. Since Pharmacy was named as a department which contributes to the “waste” m hospitals, I am obhged to respond. Mr. Lewis is greatly misinformed and has chosen to pomt out a Situation which does not represent waste. When patients come into hospital they often bring medications they have been taking, with them. In order for the physician to establish a baseline of drug therapy macist to authenticate and verify the contents of these prescriptions before they can be administered in the hospital. At this stage problems relating § to medication which has cx- excessive multiple drag use are often detected. The Department of Homan Resources which adminsters Pharmacare has clearly stiputated that while a patient ts m hospital his medication must be provided out of the hospital's drug budget. The patient's own medication is kept in safekeepmg and returned to the patient upon discharge. These drugs are not wasted No ‘waste’ in LGH pharmacy as Mr. Lewrs has charged. I wih that waste was as Lewis indicates. If sach were the case, I would be the first to eliminate it for as a taxpayer I find waste im tolerable . I appreciate Mr. Lewis’ concer about staff layoffs. They are affecting every department im the hospital and represent hardship to the hospital and to the employee. J. I have noticed Fish and Wildife Branch seems to portunity without sidering other alternatives. In this case, wouldn't a dart gun have been more appropniate? could have been transported to a much wilder area after bemeg drugged. If there is a shortage of dart guns in the Lower Mainland, the Fish and Wildlife Branch must obtain more. These occurrences will always be present im the North Vancouver area. Even Fish and Wildfife Officer Doug Adolf. who shot the this, stating that “there are always cougars on the North Shore. It ts not an unusual risk.” If thas ss truce, then why doesn't he and the rest of the Fish and Wildlife personnel obtam the equipment so that these wild animals do not have to be killed. Another pomt must be considered here. The cougars and bears m the The cougars two cougars, agrees with North Shore area are not invading our eretory. We are building on destroying thei habitat.
