It is rather like a college essay about which the ‘professor invariably says “good idea but needs work.” It .is a good idea, imaginative and well thought out, but where Parker's best the play is like without the bubbles. A one-woman = show, Praising with Faint Damns is the brainchild of Abby Hagyard who created, wrote and starred in this first production by Pepper Productions, a fledgling West Vancouver company. It provides an interesting overview of a changing America which is brilliantly summed up in.the opening song, Recapitulation, by ODEON GRANVILLE, 881 Granville, (682-7468) QDEON WEST VAN, 1565 Marine, (922-6343) PARK, Cambie at 18th, (922-9174) | STANLEY 2Granvilie at 12th 222) : VANCOUVER CENTRE, Granville at Georgia, (669-4442) VARSITY, 4375 West 10th, (224-3730) VOGUE, 918 Granvilic, (685-5434) CITY (R) Stanley 7:00, 10:00. At its best the show brings to life Parker’s work. There is a wonderful enactment of the short story The Waltz and’ some of the wittier poems are thrown out at appropriate moments in the action of the play. But although the play has flashes of life through the work of Dorothy Parker, never does it-bring Dorothy Parker herself to life, which is the stated intention of the play. There is no continuity between the Parker ex- cerpts, the biographical facts, and the drama that should hold them together because the Parker figure does not come to life on ABBY HAGYARD as Dorothy Parker in Praising with Faint Damns.
